We took the long drive up to Mauna Kea since it had recently snowed up there. The kids were only allowed to go up to the visitors center, as the air gets too thin too quick for anyone under the age of 16. So the kids, and Erin and I stayed there and went on a little hike there, while Paul, Erik, and Stacy went up to the snow.
We were completely above the clouds, and had a great time in the cooler air. Then we walked back down to the visitors center and drank hot chocolate. The kids didn't know that all the while, the dads and Grandma were loading up their truck with snow to bring down to the kids.
While they were up there, they also did a little sledding. It was steep, and fast and icy, but they had a great time!
When they got home, we had a snowball fight in the parking lot. It was SO cold, and SO fun.
Then we made the drive back down to Hilo so we could build a snowman on the beach. Who doesn't want snow and sand all in the same day?

Gotta love a snowman on the beach! It must be a REALLY HIGH mountain for the air to get so thin.
