By January the new road to Pohoiki was made and ready for visitors. They officially opened it in December, and Paul road his bike there before, but this was our first time driving over the new lava road. It was surreal. They put the new road where the old one had been, and the lava had crossed that section of road in three places. It was super crazy to see.
Pohoiki used to be a small bay with a boat ramp and a surf spot, but since the eruptions, it collected lots of new sand that crated a pool where the bay had been. It is filled with brackish water, and fed from the ocean and fresh water hot springs. It makes the water feel like bath water, not too hot, not too cold. It's so nice!
We stayed until dark and drove home, so grateful to have been here during all these changes.
